Apple computers have become increasingly more popular over the last five years. The dream of an Apple computer and a Windows computer being able to share the same information is a great success; especially for the frustrated Mac users of the last decade. By reason of, the problems with finding software that were compatible with the dominant Windows alternatives have been nullified over the years. Unfortunately, many new Mac users are migrants from a lifetime of Windows. Many may have a terribly wrong perception of a fundamental aspect: the security. of Mac OS systems.

Malware Attacks

For years, Windows users have been plagued with waves of malicious malware attacks. Since Mac users did not suffer the same fate, having an Apple computer meant you were safer from malware. Although this was true, the reason behind it is what many users of both Windows and Mac OS systems do not understand. The people responsible for creating malware are like advertisers looking to reach as many people as possible. Since Windows users are the larger demographic, dishonest hackers are more likely to put more effort into attacking Windows systems.

Security Loopholes

There are numerous debates surfacing the web on the reason why Mac OS systems are less prone to viruses. Many people stand by the assumption that it is solely due to the better security in the architecture of the system. It may be a valid point that Mac OS X is a very secure system, but people underestimate the role of determination. If 90% of computer users started using Macs, hackers would have no other option that to attack Macs. No software can be 100% secure, so eventually security loopholes will be found and exploited. Mac users need to understand that the growing popularity of their OS will eventually lead to a growing number of attacks.

Understanding The Problem

The growing number of Macs has made computing much more enjoyable for Apple fans. Unfortunately, is has also attracted a shady lot of unfriendly programmers. As a result, all Mac users need to full understand why Mac OS systems are better protected than Windows systems. In addition to this, every computer user should understand how the targeting scheme of malware attacks works. Mac users need to stop taking the security of their computers for granted.

Action That We Can Take

Although Apple claims that the latest Mac OS X has built-in security features that protect you from external attacks, it is important to be just as careful as a Windows user would be. A survey analysis has shown that both Mac and Windows users misconceive the security of Mac OS systems. Although most people assume Macs are virtually unaffected by external attacks, they are actually not too far behind.
